Second Homeless Connect Day in Brisbane
You may remember that in June this year, I wrote about Knitting for Brisbane's Needy attending the Homeless Connect Day at Brisbane City Hall.
Well the Lord Mayor of Brisbane organised another one - and my, he did the needy people of our city proud!
This time there were even more services available than before - lots more organisations gave their time and their help to others less fortunate.
Knitting for Brisbane's Needy were there in force, we were given a very prominent spot - right on the stage - we had two tables placed end to end for a "counter" and we filled both tables four times over with free knitted and crocheted garments, as well as knitted toys, and toilet bags filled with basic things like toothpaste and toothbrushes, face washers, deodorant, soap, combs and hair brushes. Even though we must have given away more than 500 items, we could
have filled those tables again and again! And again I have to say - even the poorest of people were not greedy - they would not take too much, so that another person could benefit too! There was no unpleasantness, in fact there was such a carnival atmosphere, it was a very happy day. There was a whole section of the auditorium roped off and there were various sporting activities taking place, there was basket ball, boxing and even a hula hoop contest - which was very noisy and a lot of fun!! And a choir sang Christmas Carols, which went down very well too!
Here's what the owner moderator of Knitting for Brisbane's Needy said about her experience of the day:
Well, have had nearly a day to recover from another emotional day at the second Homeless Connect Day that we have participated in. For newer members the Brisbane City Council sponsor, organise etc a Homeless Connect Day in which all sorts of support services who can assist the homeless come along voluntarily and offer their services, from legal aid, accommodation "finders", Centrelink, doctors, hairdressers, Red Cross etc with second hand clothes, sporting identities who normally have some sort of "sport" for the homeless to try, such as hula hoop yesterday (and NO I didn't give it a go!! lol) This was the third such day that the BCC have put on in the Town Hall. It commences with a free breakfast for the homeless at 8 am, and upstairs breakfast and official welcome from the Lord Mayor (or the Lady Mayoress), Councillor Bellingham etc. The "doors" open at 9 am for the homeless to start coming through to access whatever service they may be in need of. Some of our members and myself attended our first one in June of this year after being asked if we would like to participate. It was such an overwhelming, emotional day and when it was announced there would be another one in November, we were all eager to do it all again, with help of members unable to attend! Yesterday we took over 450 donations - beanies, scarves, toys, toiletry bags, socks, some baby clothing, etc. As well, members who came along during the day brought donations to, so in all we had over 500 donations there, and I came home with only 6 items, some of them being childrens slippers (obviously wrong time of the year for them).
Once again we were blown away by the gratitude of the homeless and also their politeness and a lot of them, even though they may have been wanting two items, only took one, because "someone else may want the other one"...etc.
I noted that there were a lot more families there yesterday, including one young couple with a very young baby (the baby didn't look well and the parents were so young they were only babies themselves!) but found out from one of the other service providers that this little family were living in a car, as her parents kicked them out when they found out the girl was pregnant. I know Jean R was feeling very emotional, particularly after one young lady, gave her a huge hug and kept saying thankyou, thankyou, for the lovely lacey scarf Jean handed her and showed her how to wear it to keep her shoulders warm of a night.
My most memorable person yesterday was the lady who is homeless, but is receiving chemo for cancer. She has had a double masectomy, which she discreetly showed me (not that I really wanted to see, but she just wanted me to see it ... she couldn't believe I spent the time to chat with her for quite a while). Only the day before she had been told she now has secondary cancer in her liver and stomach!! But what she really wanted was something for her about to be born grandchild!! This lady almost brought me to tears, (well I did but when I got home!) with her story of her life and now what she is suffering through. There were many more stories that were shared.
One of our newest members Carmel came along after lunch with her delightful 18 year old son, Ryan (what a charmer!! lol) and she brought 6 beanies with her. No sooner had we put them out on the table that she noticed someone taking one of her beanies, couldn't believe it would go so quickly. Within about 10 minutes all of her beanies had gone!! Think she was in a bit of shock!! One guy in particular took two, then came up to the stage to where the hairdressers were, and tried each beanie on with his sunglasses looking in the mirror the hairdressers had! We noticed he absolutely loved the red one, he didn't take it off, and I then saw him give the other one to a guy who was having his hair cut!
Can't forget to mention "Terry". Some of you may remember Yvette's and my story about this gentleman last time, who came in looking very unkempt, head down (as lots of them do), then later on he came back and we didn't recognise him, he had had his head and face shaved, been decked out in a business suit, tie, shirt, new black shoes etc. He looked a million dollars!! Well as Dianne, Daphne and I walked in yesterday this man grabbed Dianne by the arm , then me...he was wearing a shirt, tie etc and I thought "who is this??". Then he smiled and because of his missing tooth I realised who it was. He still remembered us from June. When Yvette arrived he too went up to her as well. Even though he unfortunately is unemployed and homeless again, he has kept himself clean and told me that because of last time, he has learnt more about hygiene, etc than he ever knew!! He needed a new pair of shoes, the shoes he had on orginally had the sole flapping on them, later in the day he came back to see us again and he had been given another nice pair of shoes...he was as proud as punch!! I was so surprised that he had remembered us, but he said that we had made a big impression on him when we spent time listening and talking to him in June!!
A lot of the service providers were coming up asking questions about all the beautiful things we had to give away. I had done up some of our flyers, latest newsletter etc, and the service providers were grabbing them. We got 2 contacts yesterday who would be grateful for any donations we can give them. One was from a community outreach program, a lovely Canadian lady Brenda. They are situated at New Farm and she wants some of us to go along one day next year and see what they do, and how anything we can donate would be used.
Also, a lady who works at a Women's Homeless Shelter, working with single females aged 18 upwards. She actually rang me today as well, just to ask again if we would be able to put them on our "list" of charities if we had "enough" to give them. Also she wants to know if some members could go to them next year, to give lessons to the ladies in the shelter, to help them learn to knit (crochet), so that they feel they are helping themselves by being able to make themselves a scarf or whatever. I said yes, but we are going to chat early in the New Year further.
We had a variety of donations to give out yesterday, from loads of toiletry bags (knitted, crocheted and sewn), toys, scarves, beanies, some childrens toys , etc etc. Was a bit worried that I would have heaps to bring back home, especially the beanies and I did think we had too many toiletry bags!! WRONG!!! The toiletry bags went down a treat, could have had lots more especially mens ones. Beanies went within an hour or so, as did the toys, and we were asked time and time again for blankets (only took a couple and one that Bernie brought in), so that was a lesson... more blankets regardless of weather!! Also socks, knitted were very popular as well as the new bought socks some members donated!! Some members were asking what they could start making now ... the answer ... ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING...beanies, blankets, scarves, socks, toys, toiletry bags, baby clothing, childrens clothing, gloves etc etc!!! Also please keep those samples of toiletries, toothbrushes, facewasher etc coming in... they were very welcome! Yvette had a little boy ask her if the toothpaste was "bubblegum toothpaste", if so he would use it!! Any one enterprising enough to make bubblegum flavoured toothpaste?? lol
I could go on and on, but won't bore you any longer!! All I can say is that when they have another Homeless Connect Day (which we all hope they will), that if you can come along even for 15 mintues, you will get to experience first hand the wonder of those needy people when they realise we make all these things, new, just for them!!! I feel it has changed my life, and as Lyn has said, makes you realise how well of we are in comparison to these unfortunate folk!
From the bottom of my heart ,thankyou all so very much for your contributions, which are so very very gratefully appreciated by those who received them! I have already started beanies for winter and have lots of other things I would like to do, as well.... Squares for blankets, whole knitted/crocheted blankets too...don't think we could have enough of either , plus everything else!! If you can knit, crochet or make it, whatever it may be, please do so. As we mentioned yesterday, it wasn't always the fancier things that were taken first, a lot of "plainer" items were going fast. So if you think you don't knit or crochet "well enough" believe me, it doesn't matter, they love the plain things as well as the fancier things. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Karen xx
That just about says it all don't you think?
What a day!!
And after it was all over, do you know, there was hardly any mess at all?
I hope that the pictures give you an idea of how overwhelmingly poignant the day was - thank you to Brisbane's Lord Mayor, Campbell Newman and his lovely wife Lisa!

Tiny Ballerina
This is Talitha aged three months - her big sister aged three, is in a ballet concert soon - so I made Talitha a tutu like her sister's and some little ballet slippers.
Charnelle is thrilled that her little sister is dressed for ballet too!!
The tutu looked so small when I was sewing it - but Oh My! I could have halved the length!!
So sweet!!

Look what I got for Christmas!
WIP's
Working on a few things right now! *sigh*
This little dress is the "Cinderella" dress - an old favourite of mine. This one is half way - I am using crochet thread - I think about a 10 - with a 1.75 mm hook - in a lovely coffee colour with cream bands.
I am making another the same in White 4 ply Bendigo cotton, using a 3.5mm hook.
Here's a comparison:
The crochet thread one will fit newborn to 3 months size - the white cotton one probably 1 - 2 years.
This is such a sweet little dress - I usually thread ribbon through at regular intervals, two rows in the yoke, and two rows in the skirt. I was thinking with the white one, that I might do different colour ribbons like a rainbow on the white? What do you think, dear reader?
Below is a nearly completed blanket - just have the attached knitted border to do. Pound Of Love in Purple. TLC Soft in Lavender Red Heart Super Saver in Watercolour, and an unknown yarn in delicious Granny Smith green.
Just good old Feather and Fan in the centre, and a knitted on border with mitred corners, a la Elizabeth Zimmermann. Easy mindless knitting for watching TV by!
More cotton baby things for summer awaiting completion - ends sewn in, buttons on - and the sky blue one needs more yarn - I ran out! So may do a lace knitted on edge - nothing too fancy - just a garter stitch whale tooth pattern, in white cotton.
And a bunch of little shrugs/shoulderettes/hug me tights - these knit up very quickly in about two hours tops.
Am tweaking this pattern at present dear reader - have already nutted out some adaptations to make it a bit more interesting - it involves some very nice mitred shaping - like a BSJ, I hear you ask? Very like it
Finished Projects
Been working on lots of things lately - finishing off a blanket in lavender, purples and greens for a lovely lady who saw me working on the one I made for Marlene - and immediately said she would pay me to make one. I smiled very broadly, thanked her and said "yes please!"
I have been trying to get some baby things finished too. Our summer is about to start so thought some lightweight cotton tops and sunhats would be a great idea for newborns.
Aren't the little ballet slippers adorable? A friend found them in Creative Knitting magazine and gave the pattern to me!
I made this little set in Pink Patons Touch of Ice, with Bendigo Knitting Mills 100% Cotton 4ply in white.
The ribbon is some beautiful organza type knitting ribbon (?) well that's what I call it anyway - it was just right for this little set!
Look at the cute little doggy buttons! This little white set is in Bendigo Woollen Mills 8 ply cotton. Comes in 200 gram balls for 9.50 ! Order online and postage is very cheap. If you have $30.00 or more in purchases, postage is free within Australia. Bargain or what?
Another in Bendigo Cotton. This is suitable for a little boy with a bell shaped sleeve rather than a frill. I made up the little tam - and the bootees
are Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.
Another girly one in the same colour would you believe as the boy set! It is actually mint green! I took both these pics in the same place a minute apart, wonder why the colour difference in the photo?
By the way - when using the 8 ply cotton I found a smaller needle works best - I went down to a 3.25 mm for making these. With the 4 ply, I used a 3mm and a 2.5mm!
The above sets were all made in a tweaked version of Leisure Arts #3202 Precious Layettes for Baby - Little Lamb
I sort of made up this little set - I wanted a sleeveless tank top for a baby - so did my tweaked version of a free pattern I found on Lion Brand's Site - just the front and back making it up as I went along. I knitted up the back, continued over the shoulders and made a buttoned yoke front, and then continued down the front. I crocheted the side seams together on the outside , and did a crochet trim round the armholes and round the neck and front openings, making a crochet button hole loop. The hat was a basic round hat with a decreased circular crown done on 2 circulars. Bendigo Cotton in White 4 ply - anonymous coloured cotton 4 ply (without a ball band)
Another free pattern off the internet - Lion Brand, I think. This is convertible for boy or girl, just undo the buttons and cross over to the other side. This is made in Bendigo Cotton 8 ply - I used 4mm(US 6) needles - if I make this pattern in Bendigo Cotton again I shall use a 3.5 or even a 3mm needle
I must say I do love working with this cotton though - so soft and so silky - and it is marvellous when using bamboo needles!
And speaking of Bamboo - I knitted my first garment in Bamboozle by Lincraft. It is 65% Bamboo, 30% Cotton and 5% Elastane. I love the way it knits, so super soft and sumptuous feel - BUT - it definitely slows my knitting down as it is made up of a gazillion little plies, not tightly twisted, so it does tend to split if I am not giving it my full attention! Which led to a bit of "tink"ing here and there - also when I weaved in the ends, I found the ends had a tendency to slip out again. Curses! I had a brainwave though - if I moisten the ends in craft glue - or as a friend suggested - egg white! - they will stay put. Either substance dries clear, and is impenetrable as an adhesive and will not dissolve in washing! But this inconvenience is really minor, because I fell in love with it - the finished article seemed heavy - like using pure silk! Hard to explain.By the way - bamboo needles tend to control it somewhat! But is it difficult to imagine what I made for my first experience using Bamboozle? A tiny BSJ , of course!
The Bamboozle is white and green. The deep yellow is Sullivan's Coton-A. The buttons are from Dave Rundel in Florida - you will find him ebay.com - his id is daverun
The Sullivan's Coton-A was a surprise too - I don't like Sullivan's yarns in the main - but this is the loveliest cotton - it is a 5 ply and is so soft and is a dream to knit with! And comes in some very nice bright colours.
Jacaranda Season in Montville
The Jacaranda Season, October, has come and gone. They seem to like the drought these gorgeous trees with their lavender blue blossoms - they were especially lovely this year.
These pics were taken at the top of a ridge on the way to Montville, on the Blackall Range.
There is a yellow blossomed tree, the Bucurubu, known as the Yellow Jacaranda which blooms at the same time of year. It is not strictly speaking a Jacaranda at all - but has similar leaves blossoms, only in a bright canary yellow.
This beautiful specimen was taken at the Glass House Mountains recently, with Mt Ngun Ngun in the background.
Montville is the home of the Sunshine Coast Crafts, a co-operative of artists and craftsmen and women who reside on the Sunshine Coast. Here you can find hand made jewellery, wood carving, sculpture, knitwear, hand spun clothes, pottery, paintings, hand made lace, beautiful embroidery, children's original clothing designs, hand made candles, everything you could wish for. I am lucky to be allowed to place some of my hand knits for sale there - so am madly working on some summer baby wear right now.
The whole area is very beautiful, with views from Montville that are absolutely breathtaking, as you gaze across beautiful farmlands and forest right out to sea.
